TUM São Paulo: Postdoc events in Latin America return to presence-based format

TUM Global, News, TUM São Paulo |

The TUM liaison office for Latin America organized the first face-to-face events since the beginning of the pandemic, providing first-hand information on doctoral and postdoctoral research opportunities at TUM. More than 80 pre-selected candidates took part in the events in São Paulo and Santiago de Chile at the end of April and beginning of May.

The primary goal of this event format is to prepare prospective students from Latin America for an academic career in Germany. TUM liaison officer Sören Metz organized the two events in Brazil and Chile together with colleagues from other German universities and the funding organizations DAAD, DFG, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and Euraxess.

The representatives of the various institutions presented the German research landscape in general as well as the respective funding opportunities at specific universities. In mini-workshops, differences for research opportunities in Germany and Latin America were elaborated.

Best practice: personal advice and individual exchange with the organizations

As part of the postdoc events organized by TUM São Paulo, all participants are given the opportunity to interact personally with representatives of the participating organizations in virtual matchmaking sessions one week after the face-to-face events. This individual part of the format has proved particularly popular, with over 90 one-on-one meetings held in Chile and 130 in Brazil.

Besides Sören Metz, Dr. Björn Jahnke from TUM ForTe also took part on behalf of TUM and gave the candidates an insight into programs such as the TUM Research Opportunities Week and the TUM Global Postdoc Fellowship. The events also provided a good opportunity to visit the TUM partner universities UNESP in Brazil and Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica de Chile.
