TUM Brussels: TUM celebrates its 150th anniversary in the heart of Europe

Together with the partners from the EuroTech Universities Alliance, the TUM Liaison Office in Brussels organized on November 6 a whole day, dedicated to the theme of 'Modernizing Universities' and the TUM anniversary. Next to political penal discussions and scientific pitches, the admission of Technion as the sixth member of the EuroTech Universities Alliance was one highlight of the day. The day was celebratory concluded by President Wolfgang A. Herrmann cutting the TUM birthday cake together with Hannemor Keidel.

The day started with a lunch of selected TUM Alumni, located in the wider Brussels region. In the beer cellar of the Representation of the Free Sate of Bavaria to the EU, the Alumni got the chance to exchange about their memories from their time at TUM. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of TUM, President Wolfgang A. Herrmann addressed the group with a short presentation of TUM' immense successes since its foundation until the present concept of 'The Entrepreneurial University'.

In the afternoon the presidents of the EuroTech member universities came together to welcome EuroTech's newest partner: From January 1, 2019 The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology will become a member in the strategic partnership of EuroTech.

With the theme 'University Alliances - Modernization.Excellence.Societal Impact' the EuroTech Universities Alliance organized its annual High Level Event in the evening. With an audience of almost 200 participants the event was opened with a penal discussion of President Wolfgang A. Herrrmann, his colleague from École Polytechnique (L'X) Eric Labaye and two Director Generals from the European Commission, responsible for research and innovation Jean-Eric Paquet and education Themis Christophidou. Together they discussed the role of university alliances like EuroTech for the modernization of universities. Afterwards, scientific projects of the partner Universities were presented in short pitches.

For TUM Professor Sami Haddadin presented the newly founded Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence. In a following discussion Sami Haddadin elaborated on how TUM supports him in his scientific endeavors and how important interdisciplinarity and intersectoral collaboration are for the future of universities. Moreover je shared his plans in case he would be president of TUM for one day.

The day was celebratory concluded by President Wolfgang A. Herrmann cutting the TUM anniversary cake together with Hannemor Keidel, before the participants of the event got the chance to visit different scientific demos from the EuroTech Universities, like the Franka robotic arm from Professor Haddadin.
