JADS is an innovative doctoral program that allows its participants from TUM and ICL to jointly work on interdisciplinary projects, get to know international collaboration and exchange, and undergo complementary qualification programs. At TUM, the doctoral candidates at JADS will be member of the International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE), which was founded in the context of the excellence initiative.
The aim of JADS is not only to offer doctoral candidates an excellent ecosystem for their research in future-oriented topic areas. It is also to educate them in fundamental professional and personal competences, like the ability to work together in international and interdisciplinary settings. “Our young researchers are especially close to our heart, as they will shape the future of science and research, not only at our institutions, but for society as a whole”, says Professor Juliane Winkelmann, Senior Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni at TUM.
JADS starting cohort does research in robotics, healthcare & AI
Both Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts Bernd Sibler and the Deputy Mayor for Business of London Rajesh Agrawal emphasized in their greetings the significance of this milestone for international collaboration between the two outstanding technical universities. Referring to the manifold insecurities regarding future developments, Minister Sibler said: “It is the right signal at the right time. Especially in this day and age, we need strong cooperation and intelligent programs for our young researchers.”
The first cohort of JADS works on projects in the future-led thematic field of robotics / healthcare / AI. During the kick-off event, the two academic champions of the cohort, Proefessor Nassir Navab from TUM and Professor Aldo Faisal from Imperial College, presented the relevance of this interdisciplinary research field, as well as the innovative approach of JADS. In the following, the supervisors of the six doctoral projects introduced their research questions.
TUM and ICL “in many ways the ideal partners”
JADS is the newest element of structured collaboration in the framework of the flagship partnership between TUM and ICL, which was established in 2018. Both institutions share the ambition to promote cross-boundary collaboration in research, education, innovation, and university administration through this partnership. They will create new formats for international exchange for all members of their institutions. Professor Maggie Dallman, Vice President International at Imperial College embraced the future perspectives: “In many ways, we are ideal partners for each other. There is so much we can do together.”
