Downloads on accommodation and how to prepare for departure from Germany

Below you will find important documents for accommodation matters as well as our checklist, which will help you to prepare your departure from Germany.

Accommodation

The TUM Accommodation Service offers international postdocs and visiting professors assistance in finding suitable housing in Munich and Garching. In order to get more information, please register on our portal for TUM staff and researchers and complete the form Registration - International Researcher. Please note that there is no accommodation service for Freising, but the TUM Accommodation Service can provide you with useful information.
However, due to the difficult housing situation in Munich, TUM's accommodation service cannot guarantee a match. We therefore strongly recommend that you continue your search for a suitable flat on your own. In the following guides you will find valuable information and downloads on the Munich housing market.

Finding a New Home in Munich (PDF, 7.998 KB)

How to rent an apartment (PDF, 69 KB)

Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (PDF, 86 KB): You have to register your address within two weeks after your arrival in Munich if you are going to stay longer than 90 days. Please note that you will need the housing provider confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) that has to be signed by your landlord. Regular landlords are legally bound to sign it.
If you are forced to find an interim solution, please bear in mind that hotels and Airbnb hosts will basically refuse to sign the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for several reasons. The Derag Living Hotels (see below) and their spin-off in Garching called Soulmade are exceptions and willing to sign the form. Moreover, Stellaris Apartment Hotel in Garching will issue a confirmation that will be accepted by the town hall Garching. So please make sure that you will get a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung at the very beginning of your stay before you choose an accommodation.

Stays less than 6 months

Due to limited capacities and missing offers in the segment of short term stays the TUM Accommodation Service cannot support stays under six months. To familiarize yourself with the housing market and standard practices in Munich, use the downloads above and visit the accommodation service’s website, which will prepare you for your housing search and provide answers to many questions.

TUM Living of the TUM Accommodation Service: The housing portal TUM Living offers real estate listings bundled on a central platform. There, mainly longer-term offers are published, but sometimes there are also offers for a few weeks. If you log in as a TUM member (with your TUM ID/account), you can see the contact details of the landlords. If you don't have a TUM ID/account yet and see an interesting offer, please ask your contact person or the secretariat of your TUM chair and send them the link to the offer. They have a TUM ID and can give you the contact details.

The Max Planck Foundation offers apartments for stays between 1 to 6 months. They are located at Marsstrasse 6, 80335 Munich, within walking distance to the main train station and TUM main campus:

  • Rental period: min. 1 month - max. 6 months
  • Size of the apartments: 20 - 42 m²
  • Rent: 1.150 – 1.750 € / month, depending on the size of the apartment
  • All apartments fully furnished with bathroom and pantry-kitchen
  • For more information about the apartments, please visit https://www.cnb-muenchen.de/ (the prices for TUM members are lower than those shown on the website)
  • Booking request: please fill out the Minerva Home Munich Rental Form (PDF, 189 KB) and send it to cnb-muenchen(at)hildebrandtimmobilien.com (don't miss the second page of the form and be sure to include your exact work location at TUM as well as your TUM contact person)
  • If you need a confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), please let them know by e-mail

The Derag Living Hotels may be an option for short term stays up to several months. As a TUM member, you benefit from special TUM rates for apartments in some Derag Living Hotels, where you receive the lowest rate for stays of 28 nights or more. For more information or to book an apartment, please contact reservierung.muenchen(at)derag.de and mention the TUM collaboration. You should be able to book with the promotion code if you can prove your TUM membership, e.g. with your letter of invitation to TUM. The Derag Living Hotels will also be able to provide you with a housing provider confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) if you are staying in Munich for more than 90 days and therefore need to register your address.

Preparing your departure from Germany

Similar to entering Germany, leaving Germany also requires some preparations in advance, as contracts have to be terminated and other formalities have to be taken care of. Therefore, it is advisable to start preparing for your departure at least three months before your planned departure from Germany. Please refer to our checklist below and contact the Welcome Services Team if you need further assistance.
