TUM's engagement and cooperation with partners in the Global South

TUM launched its Global South Initiative in 2023. With this initiative, TUM aims to further expand its strategic international commitment and tackle global challenges by pooling and advancing innovative approaches and expertise with selected partners in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

TUM SEED Center

Brazil: TUM and UNESP

The representatives of the two partner universities at the signing of the contract in Sao Paulo

Since 2022, TUM and the Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP) have had a strategic partnership with a focus on bioeconomy.

Ghana: TUM und KNUST

TUM and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have had a close, sustainable strategic partnership since the end of 2018.

Student exchange and initiatives

TUMexchange

The TUMexchange program offers Bachelor's and Master's students from all disciplines the opportunity to study abroad at selected partner universities outside the EU. 

TUM Without Borders

TUM International Development Cooperation, Waterwheel Project in Nepal

Students and employees address global social challenges through the TUM Without Borders scholarship program. Together with partners, they work locally on projects in various subject areas. 

TUM student initiatives

TUM has many initiatives where students can engage in projects in the Global South. They includeTU eMpower Africa, enactus, BRASA Local Munique, LATUM, and Engineers Without Borders.

Montgelas Fellowship

Through the Montgelas program, employees of the TUM University Administration can exchange best practices with colleagues from selected partners in Brazil, Ghana, or China, for example.

TUM Invited Experts in Administration enables administrative and service teams at TUM to exchange ideas with experts from partner universities and benefit from their expertise.

TUM.Africa Talent

The TUM.Africa Talent Program promotes exchange between doctoral candidates from sub-Saharan Africa and professors and doctoral candidates at TUM.

TUM-UNESP Research Exchange

Through the TUM-UNESP Research Exchange program, five doctoral students from TUM have the opportunity to spend a research stay at UNESP in São Paulo every year.

Research funding

TUM Global Incentive Fund

The TUM Global Incentive Fund supports collaborations with partners in Brazil, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Peru, and South Africa, as well as with our Strategic Alliance partners KNUST and UNESP.

IAS Fellowship Programs

The TUM Institute for Advanced Study offers various fellowship programs to open new research areas and establish intensive international cooperation.

TUM Visiting Professor Program

To expand internationalization, professors from partners can be invited to TUM for temporary teaching and research collaborations.
