Almost 1,100 incoming students: TUM reaches new record number of exchange students

TUM Global, News | 08.10.2024

In the winter semester 2024/25, TUM marks a new milestone: Almost 1,100 international students from 55 countries start their exchange semester at TUM in October. They come from 284 partner universities worldwide, and the majority of them will be studying at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology, the TUM School of Engineering and Design, and the TUM School of Management. The TUM campuses in Freising and Straubing are also popular destinations.

TUM is proud to welcome more exchange students than ever for their stay abroad in the coming winter semester. What makes our university so attractive to international students? In addition to the academic experience, social and cultural aspects play a central role for many exchange students.

Excellent flexibility and unique environment

Alexa Aziz, a student of Forest Science and Resource Management at HEC Paris, highlights two aspects in particular: academic flexibility and the unique environment of the campus. "I really enjoyed the academic flexibility to take a variety of courses," she says. HEC Paris has been a partner in the EuroTeQ network since the beginning of 2024, which has opened up new exchange opportunities. A particular highlight for Alexa is the TUM campus in Freising: "The proximity to nature and agricultural areas allows me to connect more strongly with what I am studying."

The academic challenges go hand in hand with the many activities outside the lectures. Chuan Kai Ong, a Computer Engineering student from the National University of Singapore, summarizes his motivation for coming to TUM in one sentence: "TUM is tough, but it's also fun."

New friendships and intercultural exchange are among the highlights of a stay abroad, not only for him. The social aspect is attractive for most incoming students. At TUM, they find great support from the International Campus Life offers in cooperation with the student association ESN TUMi Munich: a diverse semester program – from speed-friending to hikes in the surrounding area to city tours – makes it easier for international students to get started and make contacts, especially at the main campus in Munich and at the Garching campus. The orientation weeks at the beginning of the semester are particularly popular.

A stay at TUM as a stepping stone for the future

For many international students, a semester abroad at TUM is the start of a global career. Exchange programs such as Erasmus+ and TUMexchange play a central role in TUM's internationalization efforts and serve as a stepping stone for future Master's or doctoral students. Many exchange students are already planning to return to TUM for further studies, and some have even decided to stay in Germany long term.

We wish all exchange students a successful start to the winter semester at TUM!
