A semester abroad is more than just studying at another university – it’s a journey into new cultures, friendships, and experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. Every study abroad experience helps you grow both personally and academically: you learn to navigate new environments, build international networks, and develop skills that give you a real advantage in the global job market. With TUMexchange, doors open to the world: in their experience reports, three TUM students share eye-opening experiences in countries like India, Vietnam, and Mexico that gave them fresh perspectives. Get inspired and apply starting October 21 for the next TUMexchange round.

An increasing number of TUM students are taking the opportunity to study abroad: in the 2025/26 academic year, nearly 700 students will go to 130 partner universities in 30 countries through the TUMexchange program. Tuition fees at the partner universities are generally waived through TUMexchange, although the program does not include a scholarship. Careful planning is therefore especially important. Credits earned abroad can, of course, be recognized by your TUM School and recorded in your Diploma Supplement.
Popular destinations include Japan, China, South Korea, and the USA – as well as Australia and Canada. These locations are highly sought after. Students who, like TUMexchange participants Johannes, Sofia, and Felix, choose less conventional destinations often have a better chance of securing a TUMexchange spot and can also benefit from lower living costs in the host country.
India – Cultural diversity and academic excellence
India impresses not only with its immense cultural diversity. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), a network of renowned engineering universities, are known for their very high academic standards. Johannes von Boehmer, a Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, spent the Winter Semester 2024/25 at IIT Bombay. He chose India because he wanted to fully immerse himself in the country’s culture while studying at a top university. He was particularly fascinated by the cultural and religious festivals in Mumbai, where exchange students are often invited to join in, gaining valuable insights into local traditions.
Johannes was also drawn to the contrasts between the bustling megacity and the green, peaceful campus with its strong sense of community. For him, the semester abroad was a truly eye-opening experience. “Studying at a leading technical university in India broadened my global perspective, brought me new friendships, and created memories that will last a lifetime.”

Vietnam – Traditional ways of life and personal growth
Sofia Schepers, a Bachelor’s student at the TUM School of Management, chose to study at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). She selected Vietnam because, in addition to low living costs, it was important for her to feel safe as a woman and to have the opportunity to get to know the country and its culture in depth. At HUST, courses for exchange students are taught in English, but she still recommends learning some basics of the local language – it makes daily life easier and fosters closer connections with people.
Although selecting courses initially seemed a bit complicated, Sofia received plenty of support from coordinators, buddies, and professors. She notes that exchange students enjoy many privileges and that faculty are very accommodating when problems or deadlines arise – following the motto: “It never hurts to ask.” At first, Hanoi felt overwhelming: the city seemed chaotic and noisy, but after a short adjustment period, Sofia was able to appreciate its colorful vibrancy and the friendliness of its people. For her, the semester abroad was not only academically rewarding but also a truly horizon-expanding experience. She reflects: “It’s valuable to go abroad alone and be on your own. I met wonderful people, and we all grew personally in many ways – each in our own way.”
Mexico – Hands-on learning and open culture
Latin America also offers students the chance to improve their language skills. Felix Markert, a Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, chose Mexico and the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP). His decision was influenced by the reports of former students and the opportunity to build on his Spanish skills. He describes Mexico as an incredibly open and welcoming country: whether at the gym, on campus, or in a restaurant, people are very sociable and it’s easy to start conversations.
Academically, Felix benefited from interdisciplinary courses and a hands-on learning structure. “The classes are smaller, encouraging close interaction between faculty and students. Assessment is continuous, through essays, presentations, group work, and short tests – not just a final exam.” He significantly improved his language skills, and his semester at UDLAP was an extremely formative and rewarding experience that he would wholeheartedly recommend to other students.
