In late 2018, Imperial College London (Imperial) and Technical University Munich (TUM) entered into a sustainable strategic partnership based on their longstanding collaboration. Imperial is considered one of the best technical universities in Europe, and is engaged in manifold research collaborations with TUM. With the flagship partnership, both institutions reconfirm their commitment to international collaboration across borders.
The success story continues: In January 2024, TUM President Thomas F. Hofmann and Imperial College London President Hugh Brady extended the TUM–Imperial flagship partnership for another five years.
The European Talent Academy, launched in 2021, is a joint initiative of TUM and its partners Imperial College London and Politecnico di Milano. It supports young research talents in developing their skills and building a network with the colleagues of the partners. More than 80 young talents have already benefited from the program. In 2025, the guiding theme of the third cohort is "Water and Food for healthy and resilient societies".
On October 5, 2018 in London, TUM President Wolfgang A. Herrmann signs the Memorandum of Understanding, to further deepen the collaboration between TUM and Imperial. The cooperation will not only further enhance complementary strengths in high tech fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Aerospace, but will also promote activities in transversal institutional topics like appointments, recruitment and career development, and entrepreneurship.
On June 17 and 18, 2019, TUM President-elect Professor Thomas Hofmann visits Imperial College London. On this occasion, TUM and Imperial announce the launch of a joint PhD program at the interface of Artificial Intelligence, Health Care and Robotics. The program will further enhance collaboration in this promising research filed, and lay the base for even more joint research projects. In the context of the visit, Professor Hofmann also engages in a discussion round at the Goethe-Institut London on "Science, Diplomacy and our European Future" .
Exchange programs for administrative staff

TUM administrative staff can visit the Imperial College London through the Maximilian Graf Montgelas Program and support the internationalization of TUM.
Through the TUM Invited Experts in Administration funding line, experts from Imperial can be invited to TUM.
Practical research programs for students

Through an international summer program, students can take part in a research internship. TUM runs the Practical Research Experience Program (TUM PREP) for Imperial College students, while Imperial offers the International Research Opportunities Programme (IROP) for TUM students.
Funding initiatives for researchers
Both TUM and Imperial College are committed to supporting initiatives for joint projects. To achieve this goal, both universities offer financial incentives to their members through the TUM Global Incentive Fund and the ICL–TUM Collaboration Fund.
Global Fellows
Program
Through the Global Fellows Program, around 40 doctoral candidates from TUM, Imperial, and NTU come together each year in a summer school to develop joint research ideas. The program helps them build intercultural skills and foster creative, effective collaboration.
JADS
The Joint Academy of Doctoral Studies (JADS) is a bilateral, interdisciplinary doctoral program. It comprises up to six projects per year, each of which is worked on jointly by doctoral students and supervisors from TUM and Imperial.
Mathematical Sciences Hub
The Departments of Mathematics at TUM and Imperial College London have established the Mathematical Sciences Hub, a joint platform that strengthens research collaborations and supports funding initiatives.
