TUM Beijing: TUM and Tsinghua University deepen strategic cooperation

News, Global South, TUM Global, TUM Beijing | 09.10.2020

Systematic expansion of cooperation in the areas research, teaching, and innovation: within the frame of a virtual conference, TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann and Professor QIU Yong, President of Tsinghua University, agreed on establishing a flagship partnership between both universities.

Tsinghua University is one of TUM’s most long-standing partner institutions in China, with collaborations spanning a variety of joint research projects and an active exchange of students. Tsinghua regularly counts as the best technical university in China, and scored #20 in the most recent Times Higher Education Ranking.

Strengthening collaboration in research, entrepreneurship, talent development, and further areas
Under the umbrella of the new Flagship Memorandum of Understanding, TUM and Tsinghua are committed to deepening their institutional relationships in research, e.g. in the fields of mobility, climate, machine intelligence or intelligent manufacturing, but also in regards to topics of institutional relevance such as entrepreneurship, life-long learning, or executive education. Moreover, both partners will seek to enrich Sino-German cooperation in science and research by developing new scientific linkages and networks, with special emphasis on creating new opportunities for young talent. To this end, the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), firmly rooted in southern China’s innovation hub Shenzhen, will be integrated into the larger framework of cooperation between both partners, e.g. through double degree programs.

With Tsinghua University, TUM establishes its second flagship partnership to deepen its strategic international network after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Imperial College London in 2018. In 2021, TUM President Hofmann plans to visit Tsinghua in Shenzhen to establish new cooperation formats. Meanwhile, TUM researchers may already apply for funding in support of new initiatives with Tsinghua via the TUM Global Incentive Fund, and will receive further support by TUM’s liaison office in China, TUM Beijing.
