TUM SEED Center celebrates successful completion – prospect of new funding period until 2029

Global South, TUM Global, News | 06.09.2024

In late August, the first funding phase of the TUM SEED Center, a flagship project of the Technical University of Munich in the Global South, came to a successful conclusion during the annual symposium at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya. With possible follow-up funding from the DAAD program “Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation (exceed),” the joint activities in research, teaching, and academic exchange will be further expanded and deepened from 2025.

Headed by Prof. Frank-Martin Belz, the TUM SEED Center team is conducting research at the interface of sustainable energy and entrepreneurship in collaboration with eight partner universities from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. At the annual symposium in Nairobi in August, numerous representatives from research, industry, and civil society met to exchange ideas in workshops and networking events.

Prof. Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Senior Vice President International Alliances and Alumni, opened the symposium with a speech in front of around 100 participants on the JKUAT campus and emphasized:

“Our researchers are at the forefront of developing renewable energy technologies, producing sustainable materials, and promoting climate-resilient infrastructure. The knowledge we generate together here not only contributes to scientific understanding but can also be turned into practical applications that have the potential to make a real difference on a global scale.”

Since the TUM SEED Center is a global hub for further interdisciplinary cooperation opportunities, Prof. Winkelmann visited other stakeholders from research, development cooperation and academic exchange in the Nairobi region. Among others, she held talks with representatives of the DAAD regional office and the International Livestock Research Institute. Prof. Winkelmann also visited Mama Lucy Kibaki County Hospital to learn about medical students' training at the JKUAT and discussed possible ways of collaborating with the hospital management.

Big plans with additional partners for the possible new funding period

The TUM SEED Center plans to continue its successful path from 2025 onwards, together with other African partners, such as Stellenbosch University in South Africa, if the funding is approved again. The project aims to significantly contribute to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly to Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy.
