TUM São Paulo: Virtual PhD and Postdoc events – great demand in Latin America

News, Global South, TUM Global, TUM São Paulo | 25.03.2021

The TUM liaison office in São Paulo continues to surf the wave of success with its online events: building on last year's successful webinars on postdoc opportunities in Germany in Brazil and Chile, TUM São Paulo set new standards in terms of reach and number of participants with the first two events in 2021. More than 500 interested candidates from all over Latin America attended the preparatory events for TUM Research Opportunities Week (ROW) and DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week.

The ROW preparatory event in February was organized by the TUM liaison office in São Paulo together with the TUM Talent Factory. Nearly 80 prospective students participated in the preparatory webinar specifically for Latin American postdocs to get more detailed information about the ROW. To give interested parties the best possible insight, a TUM alumna from Brazil and a TUM alumnus from Colombia reported on their very personal ROW experiences. More than half of the participants joined from Brazil, the rest from Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.

The feedback again highlighted how much participants value alumni involvement. Around 99% would recommend an event like the ROW preparation event to colleagues or friends. This year, ROW will be held entirely virtually from April 12 to 16 and will be open to all candidates who meet the eligibility requirements.

Enormous response to DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week preparation webinar

The São Paulo liaison office, together with the TUM Graduate School and colleagues from the FU Berlin, held the event with the largest number of participants to date at the beginning of March. Several records were set at the doctoral seminar for Latin America: 600 interested parties had registered in advance and in the end 430 participants connected and wanted to find out about funding opportunities. Most of them came from Brazil (42%), 27% from Colombia, 7% from Peru and 6% from Chile and Ecuador. But we were also pleased to receive interested candidates from Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela and other Latin American countries.

The participants especially appreciated the involvement of the DAAD offices in Rio de Janeiro and Bogotá, which presented their funding opportunities for doctoral studies in Germany. At this event, TUM also invited a Brazilian doctoral student who gave a first-hand account of his experiences and was able to answer questions such as "How do I find a host?" or "How do I approach my potential host?". The goal of the event was to prepare interested parties for the DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week from April 12 to 16. Modeled after ROW, the Doctoral Week is aimed at international candidates interested in pursuing a doctorate at TUM.

Further events specifically for Brazil and Spanish-speaking South America are planned for the second half of the year – more information will be available in a timely manner directly on the LinkedIn page of the TUM São Paulo Liaison Office.
