TUM São Paulo: TUM liaison office and DWIH celebrate 10th anniversary in Brazil

Global South, TUM Global, News, TUM São Paulo | 01.03.2022

On February 22, 2022, the German Center for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH) celebrated its tenth anniversary. The TUM liaison office is part of the DWIH in São Paulo and started its work at the same time in 2012. On the occasion of the anniversary, TUM São Paulo liaison officer Sören Metz shares joint achievements and plans for the future.

DWIH is an initiative of the German Foreign Office with five locations worldwide in New York, Moscow, New Delhi, Tokyo and São Paulo. The sixth location will open in San Francisco in April 2022. With this new opening, TUM is thus actively involved in DWIH at four locations through its liaison offices. At the San Francisco and São Paulo locations, the respective TUM liaison officers were elected as advisory board chairpersons and hereby provide even stronger support for the work on site.

DWIH and TUM São Paulo: hand in hand for the past ten years

What is special about the work and cooperation at DWIH is the concentration of German scientific and funding institutions under one roof. For example, TUM has been successfully offering PhD and postdoctoral workshops in Brazil for years together with a consortium of universities and funding agencies, with this measure receiving direct financial support from DWIH.

Over the past ten years, DWIH São Paulo has established itself as a platform for German-Brazilian cooperation and is perceived as an important and valued partner within the Brazilian scientific community.

The most important DWIH event of the year is the German-Brazilian Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation, which is held annually together with Brazilian partners. Numerous TUM scientists have already participated here as speakers, for example Prof. Pauleit in 2017 on the topic of urbanization and Prof. Sieber in 2018 on the topic of bioeconomics.

Common future by boosting each other's talents

For the next ten years, DWIH will particularly focus on the topic of innovation and entrepreneurship. This is also one of the focal points of the TUM liaison office in São Paulo. Together with partners from the region, Sören Metz plans to both bring talent to Germany and support German talent and startups in Brazil. One initiative in this area is the TUM Global DeepTech Venture Initiative with the Munich Global Impact Sprint, for which participants from all over the world can register until March 15..

On March 10, TUM São Paulo will be holding an information event on this specifically for interested Latin American participants. Participation is free of charge. Agenda and registration link
