TUM São Paulo: TUM Global DeepTech Venture Initiative introduced in Latin America

News, Global South, TUM Global, TUM São Paulo | 12.04.2021

For the first time, the TUM liaison office in São Paulo organized a webinar on innovation and entrepreneurship in Latin America. The webinar was a preparatory event for the application for the TUM Global DeepTech Venture Initiative (GDTV). Through the webinar, it was possible to access first-hand information about the GDTV and the innovation ecosystem in Munich, almost 80 startup-savvy students as well as researchers from all over Latin America connected.

The mid-March webinar was offered by the TUM liaison office in São Paulo together with TUM ForTe and UnternehmerTUM (UTUM) specifically for Latin American entrepreneurial minded students as well as researchers interested in entrepreneurship.

With nearly 150 enrollments and over 70 participants, the event was well attended and featured impressive regional diversity. 63% of the participants were from Brazil, 10% joined from Colombia, 6% from Argentina, 2% from Chile, and the remainder from other Latin American countries.

The attendees were mainly interested in learning how to start a business in Munich and at TUM and how innovation and entrepreneurship is setup in Germany in general. After the event, almost 70% of the participants said that they had been motivated by the event to found a startup in Munich or Germany.

TUM Global DeepTech Venture

The main point of the event was the presentation of the TUM Global DeepTech Venture Initiative. Together with UnternehmerTUM, it supports potential startup teams from other countries to settle in Munich in order to implement transformative technology developments in a market-oriented manner. The focus is on the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing and sustainable mobility - areas in which TUM is particularly strong in research.

The core topic of the GDTV presentation was the TUM DeepTech Accelerator. This online program supports international tech talent and teams in developing their business idea. Participants gain access to Europe's leading center for startups and innovation as well as Munich's startup scene.  All participants benefit from one-to-one support from the startup advisory service, online workshops, pitch trainings and exclusive support from mentors and industry experts.

The Accelerator is a unique opportunity for talented people from all over the world to develop their own ideas and start a company in Munich with the support of experts. The next round of the Accelerator will take place from May 3 to 28 and enrollment is still possible until April 23.

Special added value through first-hand experience report

The audience perceived the contribution by TUM alumnus Pedro Gomez, who shared his personal startup story, as a special highlight. The Mexican-born founder studied at TUM's partner university Tec de Monterrey and successfully completed his master's degree and doctorate at TUM.

The idea for his startup Orbem came to him during his research and almost all of his co-founders were doing their doctorates at the same department at TUM. Orbem was funded by the startup grant EXIST from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and was the winner of the TUM IdeA wards in 2018. Pedro is CEO of the startup and reported in detail at the event about his support from TUM and UTUM, thus encouraging the candidates to found their own company.

The added value of the alumnus' involvement was also confirmed by the feedback received after the event: Around 96% of participants said they would recommend an event like the GDTV webinar to their colleagues and friends.

Events about the topic entrepreneurship

The next event is already planned for startups from Latin America: On April 15, a pre-event for the International Logistics Congress ITS will be organized for startups in the mobility and logistics sectors. At this event the liaison office in São Paulo is cooperating with the Mobility Hub of UnternehmerTUM. For more information, please visit the LinkedIn page of TUM São Paulo.
