TUM São Paulo: TUM expands cooperation in Brazil during anniversary year

TUM São Paulo | 05.04.2018

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and it is not only celebrated in Munich and Bavaria, but on international level as well: On this occasion, numerous friends, alumni and cooperation partners of TUM attended the festive reception at the residence of the German Consul General on March 23 in São Paulo. Some alumni even traveled more than six hours by car to celebrate the strengthening of their alma mater's cooperation ties with Brazil.

During the first quarter of 2018, a total of four projects in Brazil with partners from the state of São Paulo were successfully carried out thanks to the "TUM Global Incentive Fund" program. The collaborations are largely based on joint activities from TUM scientists with three leading universities: Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) and Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP). The fields of cooperation include landscape architecture, microbiology, food chemistry and bioeconomy.

Especially the last cooperation is a real novelty: by joining forces in a tripartite cooperation together with the University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia, a "Global Bioeconomy Alliance" is in the making. At the end of June, representatives of TUM, UQ and UNESP will meet in Munich and conduct a joint symposium on "Natural Products: Analytics, Biodiversity and Biochemistry" with the aim of further strengthening this alliance.

As a further step towards deepening the cooperation with Brazil, the Vice President for International Faculty Recruiting and Career Programs, Dr. Ana Santos Kühn, signed an agreement with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) at the end of March. Planned joint activities will include high-profile doctoral training projects together with the TUM International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE) as the corresponding partner at TUM.

A big thank you to Sören Metz, our Liaison Officer in Brazil, for organizing a wonderful anniversary event! Recognizing early the potential of this dynamic region, TUM's Latin American office (TUM São Paulo), was founded in Brazil in 2012 at the German Centre for Research and Innovation - São Paulo (DWIH-SP), in order to build up and expand joint cooperation.
