TUM São Paulo: Rush on the first virtual postdoc event in Brazil

News, Global South, TUM Global, TUM São Paulo | 15.12.2020

For the first time, the TUM São Paulo office hosted a completely virtual postdoc event. Almost 180 interested people from all over Brazil participated in the online event on November 9 and 10, 2020. The second day was all about advice: Around 150 candidates received individual tips for their future planning from liaison officer Sören Metz and his colleagues in matchmaking sessions.

Every year, the TUM liaison office in São Paulo organizes an advisory event for postdocs together with other German universities in Brazil. This year it had to take place virtually, but this did not detract from the success of the event.

General funding options and individual consulting

On the first day, the organizers first introduced the candidates to funding opportunities offered by the DFG, the AvH, the DAAD, and EURAXESS as well as the research opportunities offered by the participating universities via an online seminar.  Two Brazilian alumni also reported on their personal experience as postdocs in Germany and made the opportunity more tangible for the audience.

On the second day, the postdoc candidates were able to hold individual discussions with representatives of the participating universities and funding organizations via a digital platform. 150 candidates took up this offer.

The postdoctoral workshop in Brazil has been organized by the TUM Liaison Office in São Paulo since 2014 – this year in cooperation with the Freie and Technische Universität Berlin, the University of Potsdam, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University of Münster.

Great interest in TUM's opportunities for Postdocs

Together with two colleagues from the TUM Talent Factory, TUM Liaison Officer Sören Metz advised nearly 20 pre-selected postdoc candidates. A large number of the participants showed great interest in the TUM Research Opportunities Week program, which is expected to be held again next year on a purely virtual basis.

Sören Metz was very pleased that the online format was so well received: "When we switched to a virtual format, two things were particularly important to us: on the one hand, we wanted to offer postdoc candidates the opportunity to inquire about funding opportunities. On the other hand, they should also be able to find out about research opportunities at TUM directly in a face-to-face counseling session. This worked out very well with the two-day event."

Following on from the successful virtual format in Brazil, the Liaison Office in São Paulo has set up a second event for Chile. You can read more about this event shortly in the TUM Global News.
