TUM São Paulo: First-time co-funding with Brazil through TUM Global Incentive Fund

Global South, TUM Global, News, TUM São Paulo | 21.08.2022

Starting in 2023, for the first time, the TUM Global Incentive Fund will be co-funded by the Brazilian side via a cooperation with the research funding agency of the state of São Paulo, FAPESP. TUM researchers and their partners can submit applications for seed funding for planned collaborative projects until October 31.

Research collaborations with Brazilian partners can now for the first time be supported through the TUM Global Incentive Fund. One example of top collaboration already in place is the AmazonFACE program, launched in 2019 and coordinated on the TUM side by Prof. Anja Rammig and on the Brazilian side by Prof. David Lapola of the University of Campinas. FAPESP is one of the most important funding institutions for scientific and technological research in Brazil. It has a fixed annual budget, which is comparatively high at one percent of the state's total tax revenue. With this, the funding agency supports research and finances the exchange and dissemination of science and technology produced in São Paulo.

As seed funding for international collaborations, FAPESP has its own program line, SPRINT (São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration) for scientists in the state of São Paulo, in which TUM is now participating for the first time.

Strengthening and expanding the network for research collaborations

With our three outstanding partner universities UNESP, USP and UNICAMP as well as numerous scientific institutions in the state of São Paulo, this new joint call for proposals offers an attractive funding opportunity for TUM scientists in all disciplines.

Who is eligible to apply?

All TUM researchers – at least TUM Junior Fellow – as well as researchers from universities and scientific institutions in the state of São Paulo are eligible to apply.

Which activities are supported?

  • Research projects of all disciplines incl. meetings and visits that serve the preparation of joint research projects (e.g. preparation of a third-party funding proposal)
  • Development of project-specific virtual cooperation formats, networking events (e.g. international workshops and seminars) to initiate and intensify new or existing collaborations
  • Day and week-long events involving staff and students to explore new cooperation ideas
  • Establishment of joint research-oriented courses at postgraduate level, including MOOCs

How large is the amount of funding?

Through this cooperation, a total funding volume of up to 20,000 euros per project is possible for a total of five selected projects (up to 10,000 euros each for TUM scientists via the TUM Global Incentive Fund and for scientists from the state of São Paulo via SPRINT).

How to apply?

TUM researchers can submit their applications through the TUM Global Incentive Fund call until October 31, 2022. Detailed information on the conditions and the process can be found on the TUM Global Incentive Fund website.

The same application will be submitted in parallel to FAPESP by the research partner:s working in the state of São Paulo. The results of the two-way selection will be published on January 27, 2023.

For specific questions about the call with FAPESP and also about finding partners in Brazil, please feel free to contact Sören Metz at TUM São Paulo.

FAPESP and TUM look forward to receiving the first applications for this pilot call and to initiating and supporting international research cooperation between Germany and Brazil.
