TUM São Paulo: Brazil's oldest university celebrates its 100th birthday – and TUM congratulates

Global South, TUM Global, TUM São Paulo | 22.07.2020

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. In 1920, the Universidade do Brasil was founded as the first public university by merging several public universities from the fields of engineering, law, social sciences, and medicine. The largest federal university in Brazil covers all areas of knowledge as a comprehensive university.

Due to the current pandemic situation in Brazil, the entire UFRJ celebrations are taking place online. From July 14 to 24, the university organized a digital knowledge festival for its own community and partners. The international partners were invited on July 16.

Presentation of TUM at the birthday celebrations

TUM São Paulo liaison officer Sören Metz took this occasion to congratulate the colleagues personally. It was also an ideal opportunity to introduce the opportunities for doctorate and postdoc at TUM as well as the various exchange formats to the UFRJ students.

As part of this event, the questions of the participants who joined via streaming platforms were answered directly by the speakers. The main focus was on questions about the required language skills and possible support from German universities and funding agencies such as the DAAD and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The event was broadcast live on YouTube and has already been viewed over 1,600 times in the meantime.

Connection between UFRJ and TUM

Since 2019, the URFJ has been administered by medical professor Prof. Dr. Denise Pires de Carvalho. In the 100-year history of the university, she is the first woman to be appointed rector. In August 2019, the then President of TUM Prof. Herrmann visited the UFRJ to maintain good relationships with the partner university.

The student exchange between TUM and UFRJ is also very lively. For TUM students, the UFRJ is one of the most popular destinations for an exchange in Brazil – although the attractiveness of the city of Rio de Janeiro may also have an impact on the choice of place of study.
