To ensure the high quality of reporting on science and scientific topics, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Robert Bosch Stiftung have been organizing the science course for journalists "Diving into Science" since 2014. The exclusive course is designed as an effective way for experienced journalists working in all forms of media to, despite lacking a scientific background, educate themselves to the extent necessary for good reporting.

In the continuing sessions, 15 journalists are given the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge and familiarity with the tools of the trade. With “Dive in and go deeper” as the underlying motto, the participants meet with selected internationally recognized scientists and experienced science journalists within the framework of a carefully planned programme. In this context, for example, the topics of genetic engineering and infectious diseases have already been dealt with in the past.

This year, the science course for journalists will be concentrating on the topic "Data - Resource of the Future?", which will also visit Silicon Valley MArch 13 to MArch 17, 2018. In this context, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and the MPI for Computer Science in Saarbrücken, as well as the Research Center Juelich and the Leopoldina in Halle have already been visited.

As part of this program, Dolores Volkert will participate in a roundtable discussion with selected journalists on the topic of "Encouraging Entrepreneurship of Researchers" on March 17, 2018, to talk about her work for TUM in the San Francisco Bay Area and her experience in the Silicon Valley.

With her work in Silicon Valley, Dolores Volkert promotes TUM's scientific and technological excellence by organizing networking events, webinars, and lectures on selected research and innovation topics. At the same time, she connects TUM scientists and researchers with scientists and researchers, companies and other stakeholders in the US in order to facilitate mutual knowledge exchange and to intensify exchange relations.
