TUM Mumbai: Strong focus on sustainability at this year’s Indo-German Research Forum

News, Global South, W00BWE-newscat-global, TUM Global, TUM Mumbai | 01.04.2021

This year's Indo-German Forum on March 16 and 17, 2021, addressed the multidimensional issue of urbanization and climate change. Numerous international experts from various disciplines participated to share their insights and perspectives on this highly topical issue. One of these experts, who was also invited as a speaker, is Professor Werner Lang from the TUM Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering. TUM Mumbai liaison officer Mohaa Vyas attended the event and shares her impressions.

At the virtual Indo-German Research Forum on Climate and Cities, organized as always by DWIH New Delhi, scientists and association representatives from all over the world presented their research projects and analyses on the relationship between cities and climate in various panel discussions.

Professor Werner Lang, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building at TUM, was invited as an expert speaker for the panel session Green buildings for today’s cities. In his presentation, Professor Lang revealed that the building sector is responsible for about one third of the world's resource consumption.

Efficiency, consistency and sufficiency for a sustainable and liveable future

To ensure a more sustainable and liveable future, he advocated energy efficiency through better insulation and regenerative construction technologies, a circular economy to avoid waste, and frugality that enhances quality of life by reducing ballast. As an example of a ‘circular’ building that meets these criteria, Professor Lang presented the NexusHaus – a joint pilot project by students from TUM and the University of Texas at Austin, that was developed under his supervision on TUM’s side.

TUM Graduate School booth attracting high numbers of Indian visitors

Concurrently with the thematic panel discussions, DWIH New Delhi organized a virtual information fair as part of the forum. Representatives from 25 German and Indian universities and organizations provided students and young scientists with information about possible opportunities at their institutions.

Alongside Mohaa Vyas, TUM was represented at the virtual booth by Zizheng Zhang and Agnieszka Slota from the TUM Graduate School. With over 90 visitors, the booth generated great interest among potential researchers looking at joining TUM. They followed a short presentation by Sana Javaid about her experience as a doctoral candidate at TUM with great interest.

Indo-German Research Forum 2021 – an all-round successful event

The TUM representatives are very happy about the large number of visitors at the TUM booth. Special thanks go to the DWIH New Delhi team for the professional organization of this year's Indo-German Research Forum, which reached a broad target group: International scientists had an excellent platform for exchanging expertise in the field of Cities and Climate. Students and young scientists had the chance to get detailed and personal advice on a wide range of programs at the represented universities and organizations.

Furthermore, the forum provided a great networking opportunity for all participants with their German and Indian counterparts. We are already looking forward to the next Indo-German Forum! Hopefully by then, it will be possible to welcome the attendees in person. Our fingers are crossed.
