On September 19, 2022, Prof. Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Senior Vice President for International Alliances & Alumni, traveled to India. The main purpose of the trip was to visit IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur to meet with the partners of the Indo-German Partnership (IGP) and push joint projects.

In Kharagpur, Senior Vice President Winkelmann spoke with staff from the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and the School of Medical Science and Technology, among others. Together with Prof. Mukhopadhyay, Dean Outreach and Alumni Affairs at IIT Kharagpur, she signed a Letter of Intent to further promote the Indo-German Center for Intelligent Transportation Systems. On TUM's side, Prof. Constantinos Antoniou from the Chair of Networked Transportation Systems is in charge of this project.

Deepening strategic ties with Indian partner institutions

The Letter highlights opportunities for further collaboration and sets a future agenda on activities including advisory and consulting services and the undertaking of research-intensive projects within the Indo-German Center, which will also engage other partners from German and Indian academia and industry in the long term.

Another highlight of the visit to Kharagpur was a meeting with scientists and students who had spent time at TUM for research projects or within the framework of the KOSPIE program.

Prof. Winkelmann was accompanied on her trip by Mohaa Vyas, TUM Mumbai Liaison Officer and Senior Regional Manager India. At IIT Bombay, the two TUM representatives gained further insights into various current IGP research cooperation projects. Here, a meeting with Prof. Rao was on the agenda. He is in charge of SEED Himalaya at IIT Bombay, the joint project with the TUM SEED Center, which was officially launched on October 3, 2022.

New opportunities for collaboration identified

In Mumbai, Prof. Winkelmann also attended the annual meeting of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, where she engaged with numerous representatives of German and Indian companies. The seven-day travel program concluded with a meeting with Consul General Achim Fabig, which provided the two TUM representatives with many ideas for increased cooperation in India. In addition, exciting cooperation opportunities with new partners were identified, and will now be pursued further.

If you have any questions about TUM activities in India, please do not hesitate to contact Mohaa Vyas.
