TUM Brussels: President Herrmann stresses enormous importance of the European project for universities

TUM Brussels | 11.03.2019

Wolfgang A. Herrmann, President of TUM, was invited to Brussels by the European Universities Association (EUA) to attend a panel discussion on 'The role of universities in innovation ecosystems' on March 8. During the discussions, he underlined the importance of the European project for the university landscape. This should not be used as a tactical game by nationalists but be taken seriously. On the side lines of the event, President Herrmann and President Ilka Niemelä of Aalto University Finland signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding on future cooperation.

The panel discussion featured a study commissioned by the EUA on the role of universities in innovation ecosystems. Overall, the study covers nine case studies, TUM is one of them, in different regional contexts and with different approaches to innovation. On the podium, President Herrmann and President Niemelä, together with high level representatives of the EU Commission, discussed current challenges modern universities are facing and the importance of the support by Europe.

On the occasion of the event, TUM also built up on its European engagement further. Together with President Niemelä, President Herrmann signed a MoU between TUM and Aalto to strengthen the future cooperation of the universities. The signing took place in the Bavarian representation in Brussels. The focus of the cooperation will be innovation, entrepreneurship, design, and biogenic raw materials.

The day in Brussels was rounded up by a meeting between President Herrmann and Antonio Vicente, Chief of Staff of European Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas. The discussion included topics such as the new European Innovation Council (EIC) and the better integration of social sciences and humanities in engineering.
