News, Global South, TUM Global, TUM Beijing | 07.12.2021

On December 3, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS) and TUM Beijing hosted another round of Tsinghua-TUM Talks as part of the TUM Global Dialogue Series 2021. Around 170 students and researchers from China and Germany came together to exchange ideas on the topics of innovation and sustainability, which was followed by more than 27,000 viewers via live streaming.

Prof. Helmut Schönenberger, Vice President Entrepreneurship, represented TUM in the distinguished panel. Participants from Tsinghua SIGS were Prof. Peter Russel, Dean of the Institute of Future Human Habitats and Prof. Juan Feng, Associate Dean of the Department of Management Science & Engineering. Tsinghua alumnus Dr. Zhihan Wang, Chairman of Bronze Technologies Ltd. and Christopher Knoch, COO and founder of the TUM start-up Phelas completed the virtual panel.

This year’s Tsinghua-TUM Talks focused on how values of sustainability shape innovation in a university-related context and how entrepreneurial talents reflect the relevance of sustainability in innovation processes, product development, and business strategies in Germany and China.

Leading universities carry responsibility for innovation and sustainability

“As leading universities, we have a responsibility to ensure that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand”, said Prof. Dr. Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Senior Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni in her welcome remarks. “A mindset that encourages sustainable innovation will certainly support us in confronting the manifold challenges that define our lives in the 21st century, and in this regard, China and Germany, Tsinghua University and TUM have a leading role to play.”

Prof. Bin Yang, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, concurred: “Innovation and entrepreneurship have been essential in the cooperation between Tsinghua SIGS and TUM.”

The Tsinghua-TUM Talks is an annual event series, which was piloted in late 2020 to resounding success, providing insights into topics that are as relevant for the strategic flagship partnership between TUM and Tsinghua University. In the future, Tsinghua and TUM plan to organize further networking formats within the framework of this partnership in order to connect scientists from both institutions even more closely in joint focus areas.
