TUM Beijing: An insight into Chinese culture

Global South, TUM Global, News, TUM Beijing | 07.07.2022

"They don't mean it like that." In intercultural communication, misunderstandings occur again and again. How, for example, does one accurately understand the Chinese mindset? TUM Beijing liaison officer Zhenshan Jin and two other colleagues addressed this question in a workshop as part of TUM Global Week 2022. More than 20 students, scientists and TUM employees took part in the event on June 30 and were able to learn more about the interesting differences between Chinese and German culture.

The intercultural workshop was opened with a short speech by Zhenshan Jin, in which she presented TUM's engagement in China and the current work priorities of the TUM Beijing liaison office.

Afterwards, Dr. Peng Kuang, project manager of the Bavarian University Center for China, explained the peculiarities of Chinese culture and the essential differences between Chinese and German culture with the help of some very vivid examples. Finally, Dr. Hao Zhou, responsible for Chinese courses at the TUM Language Center, briefly presented the free course offerings at TUM.

Facilitating cooperation with our Chinese partners

TUM has already defined China as a strategically important partner country since the first Excellence Initiative in order to promote the concerted expansion of cooperation. Since then, China has a high importance for the international cooperation of TUM – in the dimensions of scientific cooperation, studies and teaching, as well as student mobility.

The goal of the workshop was to help build bridges for collaboration through insights into Chinese culture and an accompanying better understanding of an often different way of thinking. Zhenshan Jin explained: “We hope to provide participants with some useful suggestions for cross-cultural communication through this event, so that their future study and research in China and communication with Chinese partners will be smoother.”
