TUM Beijing: 2nd TUM-Tsinghua SIGS workshop on smart materials – further intensification of cooperation planned

Global South, TUM Global, News, TUM Beijing | 02.06.2022

On May 31 and June 1, 2022, the second TUM-Tsinghua SIGS workshop on smart materials took place. 25 representatives from both universities participated in the online event.

Last November, professors from TUM and Tsinghua University had exchanged their latest research results in the field of smart materials for the first time in a workshop. Under the academic workshop leadership of Prof. Bilu Liu, Deputy Dean of the Institute of Materials Research, and Prof. Nikolaus Adams, Director of the Munich Institute of Integrated Materials, Energy and Process Engineering and Head of the Chair of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the TUM School of Engineering and Design, an interest in a second follow-up workshop became apparent.

In the presence of Prof. Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni , Prof. Bin Yang, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, and Prof. Chuanjie Zhang and Prof. Feiyu Kang, Associate Deans of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), this second workshop now provided a platform for an in-depth exchange on common research interests and cooperation potentials on the topics of Energy, Nano and Building Materials, Organic and Biomedical Materials, and Computational Material Design and Machine Learning.

"We will continue to promote world-class research collaboration"

“We are very excited to strengthen our remote collaboration through this joint webinar”, stated Prof. Winkelmann. “The Technical University of Munich and Tsinghua University will work together to continue promoting world-class research. We are willing to create more cooperation platforms for outstanding scientists from both sides. A mentality that encourages international cooperation will certainly support us in better addressing the multiple challenges that define our lives in the 21st century, in which Tsinghua and TUM can play a leading role”, said Prof. Winkelmann.

Prof. Yang mentioned in his speech that since the signing of the flagship partnership agreement in 2020, Tsinghua University and the Technical University of Munich have witnessed cooperation between the two institutions deepening in various aspects. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany.

“It is our privilege to hold this joint event and deepen our partnership in this meaningful year. I very much look forward to more possibilities in our partnership and more fruitful outcomes for our joint events and initiatives”, said Prof. Yang.

Considerations for double degree in smart materials

During the workshop, professors from the two universities also discussed matters related to the establishment of a double degree program in smart materials. The academic coordinators of the workshop, Prof. Julija Zavadlav, head of the fluid material model research group, and Prof. Xiaomin Xu, assistant professor of Tsinghua SIGS, will continue to be responsible for coordinating this project.
