New President of Tsinghua University visits TUM: Further deepening of flagship partnership

Global South, TUM Global, News, TUM Beijing | 20.01.2023

The new President of the Chinese partner university Tsinghua, Prof. Wang Xiqin, met with President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann and other members of the Board of Management during his inaugural visit to TUM. At the research campus in Garching and the main campus in Munich, Wang learned about the excellent research opportunities and entrepreneurial spirit at TUM.

At the start of the visit at the Garching campus, professors from various disciplines gave the Chinese guests insights into TUM's research excellence. Afterwards, Prof. Helmut Schönenberger, TUM Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Managing Director of UnternehmerTUM, welcomed the new Tsinghua President.

During the visit to the Entrepreneurship Center, Prof. Schönenberger introduced the concept as well as the strong network for founders that TUMentrepreneurship offers in cooperation with UnternehmerTUM GmbH. In addition, representatives of two start-ups of the TUM Incubator, ease  and Rocket Tutor, had the opportunity to present their work.

Strengthening cooperation through new exchange program for doctoral candidates

The visit of the Tsinghua delegation to Munich was a welcome opportunity for President Hofmann and President Wang to get to know each other personally and for an extensive exchange between the representatives of the two partners about further possibilities for cooperation. In this context, Prof. Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Senior Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni, recapped the achievements and projects that have been implemented since the launch of the flagship partnership in October 2020.

These include the establishment of the successful Tsinghua-TUM Talks and online workshops with experts from both institutions in the field of smart materials. At the end of the meeting, the presidium members signed a contract for a doctoral exchange program to further intensify the partnership between TUM and Tsinghua.

Tsinghua University is not only considered China's leading technical university, but is also one of the best universities in the world. The institutional partnership between TUM and Tsinghua dates back to 1994.
