More than 1,200 grants: TUM again most active German university in the Erasmus+ program

News | 29.07.2020

Students and staff of the Technical University Munich (TUM) go abroad more often with an Erasmus grant than members of other German universities. This is shown by the final Erasmus funding figures for 2017, which were recently published by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This makes TUM once more the most active German university in this EU exchange program.

By staying abroad with Erasmus+, students as well as staff members can get to know the diversity of Europe first hand, upgrade their education at one of our partner universities, and improve their language skills at the same time. Stays abroad make us find out about shared heritage with our European neighbors and at the same time discover exciting new cultural ground. The Erasmus program has developed into something of a success story at TUM.

1,236 students and staff members from TUM benefited from the Erasmus program in the academic year 2017 as follows: 956 TUM students studied at one of the 300 partner universities while 132 spent their time abroad doing an internship. Furthermore, 148 staff members took the chance to promote an exchange of ideas and expertise in the framework of an international further education or work as lecturers at one of our partner universities. Already in the previous years, TUM headed the national rankings in terms of Erasmus grants. During the past ten years, the number of these grants at TUM increased by some 300 percent.

Why everyone should consider going abroad

TUM student Leon Menzel studied for one semester in the Netherlands through Erasmus+. He explains why he participated in the program and why he would recommend it to everyone:

The concept to foster students in Europe is brilliant in my opinion. Never before in the history of the European continent has there been a time where the freedom to work, live, and study wherever you want was as unrestricted as today. Every year, the exchange brings together so many people in so many places and creates transnational relations, which lead to more understanding, integration, and peace within the Union.

I actually became aware of this after visiting the House of European History in Brussels. Talking to my friends from numerous European countries, I felt gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities for us in the here and now, which have grown out of decades of peace and freedom in Europe. Given the eventful past our continent has lived through, we can consider ourselves lucky having the situation as it is today.
