Latin America: A continent full of research potential

Latin America is one of the most biodiverse and dynamic regions in the world — making it an exciting destination for early-career researchers. At the information session focused on this region, interested participants had the chance to learn more about TUM’s mobility programs in a relaxed atmosphere and to meet experienced researchers who have already conducted research in Latin America.
A wide range of collaborative opportunities
A close partnership exists, for example, with Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), which offers TUM doctoral candidates attractive exchange and collaboration opportunities. There is also the option to conduct research at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú through scholarships from the TUM SEED Center.
AmazonFACE: How is climate change impacting the rainforest?

One of the highlights of the Garching information session was the talk given by Prof. Dr. Anja Rammig on the AmazonFACE long-term ecological study, which examines the rainforest’s response to climate change. Prof. Rammig shared not only her fascination with tropical ecosystems but also practical challenges of fieldwork and gave valuable advice on planning a successful research stay.
Fieldwork up close: Challenges and solutions
The subsequent panel discussion, “Opportunities and Challenges of Research in Practice,” offered insightful glimpses into international research practice.
In addition to Prof. Anja Rammig, Sören Metz, TUM Liaison Officer in São Paulo, TUM alumna Dr. Janeth Carolina Godoy, Saltanat Kuntuarova from the TUM SEED Center, as well as doctoral candidates and postdocs shared their experiences. They spoke not only about practical challenges — such as organizing logistics, overcoming language barriers, and balancing fieldwork with academic obligations — but also about the rewarding encounters and inspiring collaborations that emerged on the ground.
The evening concluded with Peruvian and Argentine specialties — providing a perfect opportunity to make new contacts or discuss next steps.
