Christian Becker, President of ESN TUMi München and former exchange student at Eindhoven University, was pleased to see the strong turnout of around 150 participants.
“It was great to see how quickly people connected. Many stayed long after the official end,” Becker said. “It shows how important these kinds of events are to support outgoing students and make experiences more visible.”
Firsthand experiences
Conversations with current TUM students who are themselves on exchange or have recently returned were particularly insightful. They shared what life at their host universities really looks like, which organizational steps matter most, and what surprised them in their daily routines — both the positive moments and the more challenging ones. “The energy in the room was fantastic — full of curiosity and openness,” said Josh Pontrelli, Program Manager for International Campus Life at the TUM Global & Alumni Office. “Events like this show how much students benefit when they exchange experiences and support one another.”
Tips for studying abroad and living in Munich
Topics ranged from housing and finances to different academic systems and cultural adjustments. Many participants left with clear ideas and concrete advice to help them navigate their upcoming time abroad or their start in Munich.
A format that leaves a lasting impact
Exchange & Connect not only brought students together but also helped lay the foundation for new networks. Outgoing students gained orientation for the months ahead, while incoming students found support for their first steps at TUM. “The event becomes truly meaningful when connections continue and knowledge is shared afterward,” Pontrelli said. “We hope to expand this format in the future to strengthen even more connections.”
