European Talent Academy: Empowering the next generation of European research leaders

The European Talent Academy is a joint initiative of TUM, Imperial College London, and Politecnico di Milano. The program is aimed at researchers within two to seven years of completing their PhD and supports early-career academics in building international networks, strengthening cross-disciplinary collaboration, and gaining practical insights into European funding opportunities.
ETA 2025: Combining strengths on “Water and food for resilient societies”
This year’s ETA program brought together researchers from diverse areas, such as environmental engineering, biotechnology, urban agriculture, and water governance. Interdisciplinary teams developed early-stage project ideas, guided by expert feedback on feasibility and funding potential. The program culminated in Munich with project pitches to professors from all three universities, showcasing innovative collaborations and ideas with potential for future European proposals.
Dr. Manuel Ibañez, a Postdoctoral Researcher from TUM Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability, reflected: “Engaging with colleagues from different fields was incredibly energizing. The diversity of perspectives strengthened our project and allowed us to refine our ideas strategically.”
His team’s “PhycoGrid: Next generation soil remediation” project demonstrates how collaboration across fields can unlock new approaches to real-world challenges. The experience also motivated the group to continue developing their ideas beyond the program.
A structured environment to experiment and innovate

At its core, the European Talent Academy provides a structured yet exploratory environment for researchers to experiment with collaborative approaches. The program unfolds across three in-person workshops, each with a distinct focus:
- London: Community building and identifying shared research interests
- Milan: Structured co-creation, expert advice, and feasibility checks
- Munich: Final refinement and pitches to professors from all three universities
Mentors guide participants on funding instruments and articulating the societal relevance of their concepts – skills increasingly essential for successful research careers.
Looking ahead: ETA 2026 for smarter, healthier cities
Now is the time to apply for the next round and become an ETA Fellow yourself! The 2026 edition focuses on “Smarter and healthier cities on a changing planet.” TUM researchers can collaborate with peers from Imperial and PoliMi to tackle research challenges across different fields for sustainable, inclusive cities.
The European Talent Academy not only provides hands-on training and expert guidance, but also creates a vibrant international community of early-career researchers. Participants leave the program better connected and more confident in cross-disciplinary work. They are equipped to transform their ideas into impactful projects – setting the stage for the next generation of European research leaders.
