Experiencing EU decision-making processes up close, exploring the scope for negotiation, and understanding structures at the European level: All this was offered at the "Zero Waste" simulation on the sustainable avoidance of plastic waste on November 18, 2023. This workshop takes place every semester and comes up with new and innovative solutions every time. The topics of sustainability and civic engagement are at the forefront of the event. This is how TUM implements the priorities of the Erasmus+ program.
Interdisciplinary commitment to comprehensive solution approaches
The TUM Global & Alumni Office has brought CAP on board, which has many years of experience with events like this. As with all International Campus Life events, the EU simulation is open to all TUM students. During the "Zero Waste" workshop, the participants take on the perspective of political actors. In the roles of the EU Commission and the member states, they discuss a fictitious but realistic draft directive on reducing plastic waste in the EU's internal market.
The collaboration of participants from the different schools results in new creative and globally oriented concepts for waste reduction every time, for example
- A complete ban on the landfilling of plastic waste in the EU by 2025
- Reducing the production of plastic bags of all kinds by 30% by 2025 and 80% by 2030 compared to 2010 and
- The introduction of environmentally friendly technology for producing 100% recyclable and biodegradable plastic products by 2030.
