150 years of TUM: TUM San Francisco celebrates anniversary

News, TUM San Francisco | 01.10.2018

The TUM office for North America in San Francisco celebrated the university's 150-year anniversary with a reception in San Francisco on September 24, 2018. About 80 guests accepted the invitation to the celebrations of TUM’s anniversary which were hosted by Science Attaché Sabine Blankenship at the German Consulate General.

Among the guests at the German Residence in San Francisco were Cian Mitsunaga (EIT Digital), Michael Kelly (German Accelerator), TUM Ambassador Connie Chang-Hasnain and SVP Juliane Winkelmann.
Almost too good to eat: the festive cake for the anniversary in San Francisco.

Professor Juliane Winkelmann, TUM Senior Vice President for International Alliances and Alumni, emphasized TUM’s achievements since its beginnings as a polytechnic school in 1868 and honored its reputation for a culture of excellence which is being carried into the world by TUM’s many successful Alumni.

Among the well-wishers were local partners and supporters, numerous TUM Alumni pursuing their careers in the Bay Area such as TUM Alumni Elmar Mair and Arthur Gerigk, now Tech Lead and Manager at GoogleX and Director Growth Marketing at Facebook, as well as several professors from UC Berkeley and Stanford University.

TUM Ambassador and Associate Dean for Strategic Alliances at the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley, Professor Connie Chang-Hasnain, underlined the importance of transatlantic exchange and praised the excellent science at TUM. For the future she wished an even stronger cooperation between UC Berkeley and TUM and announced her full support.

Among the guests was a group of students of the TUM Executive MBA in Business & IT, who are currently on a study trip to San Francisco and the Bay Area. The delegation participates in an exclusive five-day conference at UC Berkeley on “Innovation and Business Creation”, following an invitation of Berkeley faculty members and long-time TUM partners Professor Jerome Engel and Professor David Charron.

Thanks go to Dr. Dolores Volkert, Liaison Officer at TUM San Francisco since its launch in 2015. Her tireless dedication and important contributions to successfully strengthening the ties with renowned universities, global companies as well as the start-up scene in the Bay Area became clearly evident on that evening.
