One in a million: Polina’s Erasmus+ experience in Rome

At the beginning of an Erasmus semester, many students find themselves facing questions, uncertainty, and a sense of stepping into the unknown. Yet it is precisely this time abroad that often becomes one of the most defining phases of their studies.

Since the program was launched in 1987, more than one million students from German universities have gained international experience through Erasmus+. Polina Voitenko was selected to represent the many TUM students who have benefited from Erasmus+ as part of the DAAD’s #OneInOneMillion initiative.
Arriving in a different world
Polina studies Business Administration at the TUM School of Management. During her third semester, she spent four months at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) in the winter term of 2025/26.
Among her most cherished memories are the connections she made with students from around the globe, the vibrant community life on campus, and the unmistakable charm of Rome itself.
Daily life in a completely new setting opened up fresh perspectives – shaped by cultural diversity, openness, and a different pace of living: “This experience broadened my understanding of Europe’s cultural diversity once again. I especially appreciated the Italian way of life — people are very open, emotional, and warm, which creates an incredibly lively and welcoming atmosphere.”
Well prepared for the experience abroad
Before leaving, Polina took part in an intercultural training course at TUM – an offer she now considers extremely valuable: “The intercultural training helped me become more aware of cultural differences and communication styles, and it made it easier to connect with new people and adapt to unfamiliar situations.”
This preparation not only eased her transition into life abroad but also enabled her to make the most of her time from the very beginning.

Taking the step abroad
Erasmus+ offers students the opportunity to experience Europe from a new perspective and grow on both a personal and academic level. For Polina, her semester in Rome was far more than simply studying in another country: “My time at LUISS was incredibly enriching, both academically and personally. Even though I was unsure at the beginning, the experience ultimately exceeded my expectations.”
She strongly encourages her fellow students to consider spending a semester abroad: “Everyone should take advantage of this opportunity – especially during your studies, when you have the flexibility and freedom to do it. An Erasmus semester allows you to experience new cultures, meet people from different backgrounds, and discover new approaches to learning, all while growing as a person. It broadens your perspective in ways that are often much harder to achieve later in your professional life.”

Erasmus+ at TUM
Each year, around 1,500 TUM students and approximately 100 TUM staff members receive funding through Erasmus+ – making TUM Germany’s leading institution for international mobility among both students and staff.
The most popular destinations include Spain, France, Sweden, and Italy.
Erasmus+ supports study periods abroad, internships, and Blended Intensive Programs, as well as teaching and training opportunities for staff.
