TUMexchange Incoming Students
TUMexchange offers students from our partner universities an opportunity to come to study at TUM for either one or two semesters. In addition to TUM's world leading courses, exchange participants also benefit from the intercultural experience and the chance to establish an international professional and personal network.
The program receives students from over 170 universities in 23 countries beyond the European Union in the following regions:
- Africa and Israel
- Asia
- Australia and New Zealand
- North and South America
- Russia
The TUMexchange Program allows for either one or two semesters of study at TUM.
Students are also able combine studies with an industrial internship. TUMexchange participants are expected to find their own internships, which can be completed either before or after the term of study, according to the understanding reached between the company and the student. Various resources are available for students in their search for internships and the following links offer more information:
Services of the program
- Exchange students are registered as program students during the period of their study and are accordingly regarded as students of the TU Muenchen for this period.
- Exchange students do not have to pay tuition fees at the TUM; they are still immatriculated at their home university and continue to pay the fees there.
- An orientation program (TUMi) is organised and run by the International Office for all incoming international students
- Students will be given assistance in finding accommodation at a hall of residence in or around Munich.
Application requirements
- For courses given in German, a good command of German to enable you to follow the lectures and really benefit from them.
- Please note that the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Architecture and Chemistry offer only a few courses taught in English for undergraduate students. Students who apply for the Department of Architecture are required to submit an English language certificate that can be issued by the home institution that is responsible for the testing of the students’ foreign language communication skills.
- Students who apply for the Department for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry are requested to submit a German language certificate in order to be able to attend the courses taught in German.

Application documents
Your home university selects and nominates its students for the TUMexchange program according to performance, commitment and language skills. The International Office of your home university sends your application documents to the TUM. Applications sent directly to the TUM International Office won’t be accepted!
We require the following documents (a single copy of each is required):
- An online registration form printed and signed by applicant and bearing signature and stamp of the international office of the partner university.
For students who want to attend courses taught in German, please use the German registration form. Other students can fill in the English version.
Note: Please choose TUMexchange in the field Planned Studies, Exchange Programme.
Please fill out all fields of the form. The fields that are marked with an asterix (*) are compulsory. Then click on "save". Once you have completed the process, please re-check all your details to see if they have been correctly entered. If yes, click on "next". Your data is now successfully transmitted. Please then click on “create pdf-file”, print the document and sign it. Important: The online application form already contains the application for admission to the TUM. - A one-page letter of motivation, written in either English or German, stating your reasons for applying to TUM.
- A transcript of your student record (all the grades you have attained at university thus far, written/translated in German, English or French and signed and stamped by your university)
- Curriculum Vitae in English or German.
- 1 passport photo for your StudentCard (scanned or copied photos are not acceptable!) - please attach the photo to the online form printout
- A copy of your national ID-card / passport (if available)
- A Study Plan (signed and stamped by your departmental coordinator). If you have questions about the courses at TUM please contact TUM International Student Advisors
All courses that are offered at TUM can be found here (for description how to find courses, please read here).
If there are no courses listed for the semester you want to study in (which usually is the case as you are planning your studies in advance of faculty timetabling), just choose the same semester for which you are planning to come but for the previous year (the offered courses in each semester usually stay the same).
The complete application needs to be sent by your university to the following address (please do not fax!):
Technische Universität München
International Office (incoming)
Arcisstr. 21
80333 München
Germany
Your application documents will then be checked by the appropriate faculty members at TUM, after which you will receive confirmation from the person in charge of the program. It is only then that you will have officially been accepted as an exchange student.
Application deadlines
- 31st of May for students, who would like to study at TUM during the winter term or the whole academic year
- 31st of October for students, who would like to study at TUM during the summer term
