• Students from all European Community and EFTA nations (except Switzerland) automatically receive a residence permit by mail from the foreigner’s registration authority (“Ausländerbehörde”) after registering at their local resident registration office and filling out the so called “Selbstauskunft” (information form) regarding the right of ‘freedom of movement’. Please note that you need to ask / to do the Selbstauskunft regarding the right of ‘freedom of movement’ from your side, as this will not be done automatically.
• Students from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Israel as well as Switzerland who are entering Germany without a visa (see also under "Entry regulations" the list about visa requirements) have to fill out a residence permit application (“Antrag auf Erteilung der Aufenthaltserlaubnis”), which can be obtained at the local foreigner’s registration authority, within 3 months after entering the country.
• Students from all other nations must obtain a student visa in their home country before they enter Germany (see also under "Entry regulations" the list about visa requirements). Once in Germany, they must complete a residence permit application (“Antrag auf Erteilung der Aufenthaltsbewilligung”), which can be obtained at the local foreigner’s registration authority. Non-EU-citizens will receive a residence permit for their respective programme of education (e.g. Studienkolleg or the course of study in their chosen subject).

• completed residency permit form (see under "Beantragung eines Aufenthaltstitels")

• letter of admission (“Immatrikulationsbescheinigung”) from the TU München

• proof of financing (659€): show proof of finances for each year of study in advance. If you receive a scholarship that is less than € 659 per month, you will also need to provide proof from your parents or another sponsor that they will cover the monthly difference
• proof of registration
• if applicable, a student visa
• passport-sized photographs
• fee: € 60 for first permit; € 30 for extensions

Important: Before your current permit expires please take those you do have to the Foreigners’ Registration Authority (Amt für Ausländerangelegenheiten) even if you do not have all of the above documents. In this case they will give you a provisional proof of application for a residence permit. Please have original documents with you as well as copies in case the office needs them for their records. A residence permit will be granted for a maximum of two years, and respectively extended if the goal of your residency has not been obtained, but will be within a reasonable period of time (§ 16, Abs.1, AufenthG). If you wish to obtain a residence permit extension, you must apply before your current permit expires. The residence permit is issued for a specific purpose – in your case pursuing a specific course of study at TUM. Therefore your permit expires when this purpose has been fulfilled or abandoned.
