Looking for accommodation - some suggestions and advice

There are not only public and private accommodation services available but also a good selection of advertisements which you can answer directly for somewhere to stay.

Here are some tips on reading advertisements: How to read an accommodation advertisement. Terms and abbreviations commonly used in connection with flat-hunting.

We also wish to draw your attention to the public accommodation agencies, in particular the accommodation exchange service provided by the Studentenwerk, which has a wide selection of sublet rooms to offer, as a rule. The following websites and selection of newspapers are a good place to look for somewhere to stay on the free market.

Please note that we list these links randomly and do not accept any liability or guarantee for the content.

Attention! Do not transfer any deposit or rent in advance from abroad if you're not hundred percent sure that the accomodation really exists. In case of doubt please contact the Welcome Office of TUM!

Shared flats

There are many students in Germany, and Munich is no exception, who live in shared accommodation called "Wohngemeinschaften" or "WGs", for short. Each member of the WG has his/her own room, and the bathroom and kitchen are shared with the other tenants. This also applies to sublet rooms and often for separate, single rooms, as well. It is usually possible to find a room or a flat of this description without having to pay an agency fee, and this is the most economical solution for people looking for singles accommodation in Munich.

Newspaper advertisements

The local press is also a good source of advertisements for apartments/flats and rooms to let, which are published on the days given below. If you are already in Munich, it is a good idea to buy a newspaper at any underground (U-Bahn) or suburban (S-Bahn) railway station the evening before the normal publication day, so as to be able to contact landlords/landladies early, or to browse through the online ads. Please note that not all advertisements that appear in the print media are necessarily posted online, and viceversa.

Meta-search engines

These search engines use all the regular accommodation search engines and present the collective results.

Property portals

These portals advertise mainly 1 to 4-room apartments or flats which are usually unfurnished and frequently subject to an agency fee. Please click here for an overview of all the biggest property portals, including a brief description. This represents the widest selection, in particular for people who know exactly what they are looking for, or if the search for accommodation is limited to certain areas of the city.

Portals that list only unfurnished and furnished rooms or 1 to 4-room apartments without charging an agency fee are given below. You must be registered, however, but the registration fee is relatively low compared with an agency fee.

Accommodation agencies

These agencies usually arrange furnished flats. If they succeed in finding a suitable accommodation, they charge a non-recurring fee amounting to 25% - 120% of one month's rent, depending on the length of your stay, for providing this service.
