Short-term programs for visiting professors

TUM International Center offers two options for short-term stays of distinguished international professors in order to further internationalize TUM's curricula and intensify international research collaborations: a funding scheme of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts and the August-Wilhelm Scheer Program.

Visiting professor program funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts

Program objectives

  • Internationalization of the curricula through new and innovative teaching activities. Lectures should be in English.
  • Joint research and teaching activities are desired.

Eligibility

Exclusively TUM professors are entitled to submit proposals for the visiting professor program. Self-nominations are not possible.

Length of stay

At least one week. Visits can be funded until November 30, 2018.

Supported activities

  • Complementary teaching in English (seminars, lectures, workshops, speeches)
  • Starting or fostering joint teaching/research collaboration
  • Preparation of joint proposals for third party funding

The program is not supposed to fund any fundamental teaching courses or courses substituting already existing ones at TUM.

Financial support

  • Travel expenses to/from TUM
  • Accommodation expenses (daily allowances/lunch allowances/entertainment expenses are not reimbursable)
  • Public transportation in Munich
  • Honorarium for Keynote Speech or public lecture
  • Teaching assignments.

Please note: teaching can only be funded, if the hosting TUM department issues a teaching assignment. The department may set the level of remuneration in accordance with TUM guidelines for remuneration of teaching assignments.

Selection criteria

  • Goals of the cooperation and level of innovation in teaching and/or teaching concepts
  • Reputation of the nominated visiting professor and quality of existing cooperation (if applicable)
  • Alignment with internationalization goals of the TUM department, institute, integrative research center, etc.
  • Added value for TUM students and young researchers/scientists
  • Sustainability of proposed cooperation

Application process

  • Nominations of potential visiting professors may be submitted throughout the year, however 4 weeks prior to the aspired stay. Please note that you cannot submit any application in 2018 anymore. A new call for 2019 will be published in December 2018.
  • Proposals must be uploaded to the TUM staff portal. You need to register first on the portal. After the login, please use the form Application - Visiting Professor Programs.

Registration on the portal and the upload of documents can be done by any staff of the applying TUM chair.

  • CV of visiting professor
  • List of at least five publications of the candidate, most relevant to the proposed activities

August-Wilhelm Scheer Visiting Professor Program

Program objectives

  • Developing and fostering international collaboration, focusing on new and innovative approaches in cutting-edge research fields
  • Complementary research-oriented teaching is also desired

Eligibility

Exclusively TUM professors are entitled to submit proposals for the August-Wilhelm Scheer Program. Self-nominations are not possible.

Length of stay

From at least one week up to two semesters.

Supported activities

  • Joint research projects (new and ongoing)
  • Preparation of research proposals for third party funding
  • Activities to develop/foster research collaboration
  • Research-orientated teaching in English. The program is not supposed to fund any fundamental teaching courses or courses substituting already existing ones at TUM.

Financial support

  • Travel expenses to/from TUM
  • Accommodation expenses (daily allowances/lunch allowances/entertainment expenses are not reimbursable)
  • Public transportation in Munich
  • Honorarium for keynote speech or public lecture
  • Teaching assignments. Please note: teaching can only be funded, if the hosting TUM department issues a teaching assignment. The department may set the level of remuneration in accordance with TUM guidelines for remuneration of teaching assignments.
  • For stays of at least three months to two semesters, funding is available for a contract of employment according to assistant/full professor salary levels W2, respectively W3. In this case, only an additional one-time reimbursement of travel costs to and from TUM is eligible.

  • Reputation of the nominated visiting professor and quality of existing cooperation (if applicable)
  • Alignment with internationalization goals of the TUM department, institute, integrative research center, etc.
  • Added value for TUM students and young researchers/scientists (research-oriented teaching, if applicable)
  • Sustainability of proposed cooperation

  • Call for proposals twice a year. Application deadline either in spring or in autumn
